As Seen In

Origin

The Khasi people of Meghalaya have woven with bamboo and cane for as long as there has been a Khasi memory. In the hill villages around Shillong, the basket is not a craft object — it is daily life, used to carry rice, fish, betel, and children to market. This piece is made by a small cooperative of weavers in Mawlynnong, the village often called the cleanest in Asia.

Process

The bamboo is harvested at the right moon, when the sap is low and the cane is least likely to crack. It is split by hand into fine strips, soaked in water, then woven on the lap — there is no loom, no jig, only the rhythm of the weaver's hands. The hexagonal weave you see is held by tension, not glue. Once finished, the basket is cured with a hand-rubbed oil that gives it the warmth of old wood.

Care

Keep dry. If it catches a little rain, let it air-dry away from direct heat. Once a year, rub with a few drops of mustard or coconut oil on a soft cloth — the cane will drink it back to life.
